What’s the Deal with Delegation? Part 2: Reinforcing the Directives of the Great Commission

Delegation involves several Godly principles including reinforcing the directives of the Great Commission.

Today’s thoughts relate to Matthew 28:16-20 as we see Jesus’ most explicit thoughts about Christians’ responsibility.  In verse 18, He informs the disciples: “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth” (NASB).

The concept of authority mentioned in The Great Commission beautifully reflects the necessity of delegation when believers recognize the sovereignty of our spiritual dependency.  In fact, J.I. Packer explains that “The NT word [for authority] is exousia, meaning rightful, actual and unimpeded power to act, or to possess, control, use or dispose of, something or somebody.” 1  From this, we see an unbreakable chain of events inspired by God, the Omnipotent Authority and Delegator:  God the Father delegated Jesus as the propitiation for our sin and Master Teacher who delegated His disciples to serve as His spiritual ambassadors who in turn delegated modern day believers to continue the message and work of the disciples.  In all three stages, God directs the Holy Spirit to empower and guide those He delegates in order to prevent pride, doubt, or selfishness to deter the proclamation of the Gospel Message.

In addition, Matthew 28:19 includes the imperative for disciples or followers to “Go.”  This is a rallying cry for sharing the Gospel. As others have said, seeing Christ’s empty tomb moved people’s hearts from a come and see to go and tell mentality.  In other words, Christians shouldn’t focus solely on the story of Good Friday and Jesus’ death but rejoice and spread word about Easter and His resurrection.
