The Finisher

I’m a huge wrestling fan!  In the 1990s, I’d spend Saturday mornings glued to the television watching professional wrestling.  I’d root for people like George “The Animal” Steele, the Junkyard Dog, Randy “Macho Man Savage,” Hulk Hogan, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  Each wrestler had their own stage name and unique clothes that matched their personality. I couldn’t help but holler and scream at their extraordinary wrestling moves and I found myself jumping off the bed to imitate them.

Although very wrestler knows basic maneuvers such as body slams and dropkicks, they each master a unique move that devastates opponents called:  The Finisher.  Simply put, the Finisher is the special move that changes the course of the match.  It is often the last move performed before the wrestler wins the match.

A few things stand out about The Finisher.  First,  everyone familiar with the wrestler knows about The Finisher’s devastating effects. In other words, there’s a successful track record of proven success.  Wrestlers don’t usually give The Finisher and then lose.  Second, the wrestler signals he’s about to give The Finisher.  In fact, wrestlers even have a special move that precedes The Finisher so the audience knows when it’s coming.  For example, Hulk Hogan starts shaking to pump himself up before he does his Finisher–the Atomic Drop.   Third, and most importantly, people watching The Finisher are left with an undeniable sense of shock and awe. The crowd goes wild because they have no doubt about the winner of the match!

Long before these televised professional wrestlers existed, the Apostle Paul introduces us to the Original Finisher performed by Jesus Christ.  It’s quite interesting that both the move and the person are synonymous.  Hebrews 12:1-2 tells us “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,  looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (NKJV emphasis added).

In very real sense, both Jesus and His resurrection are The Finisher.  Jesus is referred to as “the author” because He’s a member of the Trinity which existed in the beginning–before time existed.  Consequently, He was present during the creation of the universe.

More importantly, Jesus is the “finisher” because His resurrection gave a final, crushing blow to the Satan and the fear of death. In fact, I Corinthians 15: 54b-58 reminds us:   “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”

Let’s get wild because of that!
